Use your Mac microphone with Bluetooth headphones

You can use Bluetooth headphones for listening while selecting the Mac’s built-in microphone for input. Choose the two devices separately in macOS Sound settings, then check the microphone selected inside your call app. The app may use its own input choice.
Set the input and output separately
- Open Apple menu, System Settings, then Sound.
- Under Output, choose the connected Bluetooth headphones.
- Under Input, choose the Mac’s built-in microphone, or another microphone you intend to use.
- Check the input level while speaking. Before an important call, use the call app’s own test or recording feature if available.
- Check the app’s audio settings. If it names the headset microphone explicitly, choose the intended microphone there as well. Labels vary by app; this article does not claim to have verified every conferencing app.
See Apple’s sound input instructions and Control Centre guidance.
If music sounds worse when the microphone is used
Apple documents that Bluetooth headphones can use a higher-quality listening mode or a mode that supports both listening and microphone input. Audio quality can fall when an app uses the headset’s microphone. This is a different issue from whether your playlist helps concentration.
For troubleshooting, Apple recommends closing apps using the headset microphone and closing Sound settings. If needed, switch output to internal speakers and then back to the headphones. These steps do not guarantee resolution for every device or connection. Apple’s troubleshooting guide.
If your microphone choice changes again
Check the macOS input first, then the call app’s selected device. Note whether the change followed a headset reconnect or opening a particular app. This gives you a reproducible sequence to investigate instead of changing several settings at once.
SoundBuddy offers optional Input Lock to maintain a preferred macOS default input while the app is open. An application that selects its own microphone may ignore the system default. Input Lock does not force every app to follow it, and active-call switching remains unverified.
Before your next call
| Check | Confirm |
|---|---|
| Listening device | The headphones you intended are selected for output |
| macOS microphone | The intended device responds to your voice |
| Call-app microphone | Its own device selector matches your intention |
| Availability | The microphone remains connected and accessible |
If the problem continues, record your macOS version, headset model, affected app and the exact steps that trigger it. Do not assume that a device-selection utility will fix interference or every hardware limitation.
Choosing tools for a calmer desk setup
Start with the built-in settings. SoundBuddy is an option when you want microphone choice and paired-device controls close at hand. It requires Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later, with online licence checks. Available controls and battery information depend on hardware.
